Today it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site (inscribed in 2011), a museum operated by the National Museums of Kenya, and one of the finest surviving examples of 16th-century military architecture in the Indian Ocean world. The fort houses ceramics, weapons, ship fragments from the wrecked Santo Antonio de Tanna, and Swahili artifacts spanning a thousand years. Staying nearby means you can experience the fort the way it deserves, slowly, on foot, ideally early in the morning and again in the late afternoon when the light on the coral-rag walls is unforgettable.
